Tongyeong’s Dongho Port, the gathering point for conger eel trap-fishing boats. From early morning, vessels 803 and 903 prepare to set sail. The chief engineer checks the engines, while crew members move supplies nonstop. With more than a month spent at sea, there is no room for half measures—every detail must be prepared in advance. But the captain’s expression darkens. One crew member scheduled to board Boat 903 has yet to appear. With reduced manpower, every single person matters. Trap fishing relies on strict division of labor, making teamwork more critical than in any other type of fishing. One crew member, dressed in a dry suit, enters the water tank to begin “mulbong work.” By removing wooden plugs fixed inside the tank, seawater flows in, allowing the conger eels to be kept alive. The system also stabilizes the vessel during sailing. At last, the boats head toward the waters near Chuja Island—a grueling 18-hour journey. From the very first day, rough waves signal trouble ahead. As Boat 903 turns back to retrieve the missing crew member, Boat 803 reaches the fishing grounds and prepares bait—squid and anchovies. Conger eels do not appear on fish-finding sonar, so everything depends on the captain’s experience. A staggering 7,000 traps are cast, stretching nearly 70 kilometers. Once casting begins in the afternoon, the crew works nonstop for more than six hours. Night brings a brief moment of rest—dinner and sleep, the crew’s only downtime. But danger never sleeps. A passing cargo ship nearly collides with Boat 803, threatening both lives and fishing grounds, until the captain’s quick signaling averts disaster. Bad weather continues, yet hauling the traps cannot stop. At first, there are no eels. To make matters worse, the youngest Korean crew member falls ill with the flu. As seas worsen, a storm warning is issued, forcing the boat to take shelter at Chuja Port. For day-wage fishermen, lost work means lost income. After repairs and clearer skies, the crew returns to sea. Traps are cast again late into the night. On the sixth day, hauling begins—but discarded nets from other boats clog the traps, and an entire fishing line snaps. Following the captain’s commands, the crew works together to recover it, once again proving the value of experience. Finally, the tide turns. Large quantities of live conger eels fill the water tanks. Unlike other fish, conger eels must be delivered alive, with water temperature kept at 10°C. Dead eels must be removed immediately to protect the rest. Even as illness and exhaustion take their toll, the crew pushes on, supporting one another through pain and fatigue. When a boat arrives to take the filming crew back to land, mixed emotions fill the air. Some long for shore, yet their eyes return to the sea—where the reason they endure such hardship still waits.
