C’è Tallangatta, “the town that moved”, la città spostata negli anni Cinquanta per fare posto all’espansione del lago. Arriva l’armonica a bocca. Struggente, ruvida, solitaria. #LakeHume #AustraliaBikeVlog #LakeHumeBlues AUSTRALIA 7 | THE BLUES OF THE SUNKEN TOWN 🎵 The Harmonica on Lake Hume | Bike Vlog | ENG DUB Beneath the water, an old town sleeps. On the shore, the harmonica scratches the wind with its blues. Am I dreaming, or am I awake? Lake Hume appears like this: soft hills, almost English, and dry trees rising from the water like signs of time. It looks like a quiet lake, but it never stands still. It rises and falls like a breath, retreats, returns, revealing shores, temporary beaches, trunks, roads, fragments of life. Beneath its blue surface lies a submerged story. There is Tallangatta, “the town that moved”, the town relocated in the 1950s to make way for the expansion of the lake. Houses, businesses, public buildings: an entire piece of the world moved elsewhere, while the water took its place. When the level drops, from Old Tallangatta Lookout you can still make out old roads and foundations. Not quite a ghost town... something more subtle: a memory resurfacing. And then, at some point, words are no longer enough. The harmonica arrives. Haunting, gritty, solitary. The perfect instrument to accompany this Australian wandering: it does not explain, it does not comfort, it does not embellish. It simply stays there, in the wind, and follows the road. We cross the bridge over the dam through gusts of wind, with the bicycles, the camper, the dust, and the last days of the year on our shoulders. Ahead of us lies New South Wales; all around us, a magnificent and harsh nature, capable of enchanting and testing anyone who has lived here. We think of the men and women who inhabited these places, of the effort it took to build, move, stay, and begin again. Then the road goes on. Kangaroo Country, dirt roads, wind, the showground, and old Steve, who lives in a caravan and knows what it takes to live in Australia: how to get by, how to stay free, how to make a home even where there is no home, and why calling the doctor is no use anymore. In the evening, after a stew cooked outdoors, the trees grow dark, the camper becomes home for the night, and the harmonica remains suspended in the air, as if that place had found a hoarse voice of its own.
