This is the highest level in 28 years and 4 months since the foreign exchange crisis. Recently, the rate continued its upward trajectory, briefly crossing the 1,560 won mark during intraday trading. As the high exchange rate persists, the foreign exchange authorities are continuing their market response. In the fourth quarter of last year, they sold off a record-high $22.4 billion, and in the first quarter of this year, they released $13.6 billion into the market. This marks the sixth consecutive quarter of dollar selling, and it is estimated that there was significant intervention in the second quarter as well. The Bank of Korea maintains that it has sufficient capacity to respond, considering factors such as the current account balance and foreign exchange reserves. Foreign exchange reserves also stood at approximately $427 billion at the end of last month. This is more than ten times the level seen during the Asian financial crisis. As of the end of May, South Korea's foreign exchange reserves ranked 13th globally, falling behind Singapore. This marks the lowest level since rankings began in 2000 and represents a drop of four spots in just six months.
