How is this language still alive?

Hidden in southern Italy, in the mountains of Calabria, a rare language has survived empires, neglect, and centuries of change. Far from Athens, in villages overlooking the Ionian Sea, people are still speaking Grecanico — a form of Ancient Greek, and one of Europe’s most endangered languages.
