Hello, dear readers. The sweltering weather continues. Please take care of your health. AI has now deeply permeated our daily lives. We live in an era where AI assists with work, helps with studies, and even offers counseling for our worries. How, then, should Christians live in the age of AI? In the first lecture of July for ‘Faith in Daily Life,’ Father Kim Do-hyun (Paul) of Daegu Catholic University will explore the changes brought about by artificial intelligence and the direction Christian faith should take, under the theme of ‘The AI ​​Era, Life and Faith.’ Father Kim, a physicist who researched neural networks—the core technology of AI—explains the development process from the birth of AI to today’s era of generative AI in an easy and engaging way. He traces step-by-step how AI has transformed human society, from the emergence of the concept of AI in the 1940s, the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, the innovation of deep learning in 2012, to the appearance of AlphaGo and ChatGPT. We examine the realistic problems humanity will face—such as the unemployment brought about by AI, the environmental and ecological crisis, and the advancement of war and military technology—through the lens of faith. We also explain why Pope Leo XIV’s recently published encyclical Noble Mankind addresses AI as a key topic, and why the Church is paying close attention to this era. While AI is an exceptional tool, it cannot share in human suffering. It can calculate but cannot love; it can provide information but cannot grant salvation. This lecture reminds us once again that God is the only one to whom we can fully entrust our lives and futures. We hope that through this "Faith in Daily Life" series, you will confirm that faith remains valid even in the age of AI, and is perhaps a hope that is needed more than ever before.
