Mont Valier : à l'assaut du Géant de l'Ariège [DÉBRIEF'RANDO #21]

It's not the highest, but it's the most symbolic. Mont Valier embodies the Ariège region itself. A climb that must be earned! Mont Valier. A true symbol here in Ariège. It's probably the most iconic mountain, the one that evokes a strong sense of belonging to the region. It's the Matterhorn for the Swiss, the Triglav for the Slovenians. Valier is a source of pride and a giant that can be spotted from afar among the peaks of the Pyrenees. Its shape captivates the eye and ignites the imagination, sparking a burning desire to climb. I had passed by it during my 2002 Pyrenees crossing, as I was on the Spanish side at the time, aiming for Mont Rouch before reaching Pica d'Estats and Andorra. So, nearly twenty years later, the opportunity arose to reach the favorite summit of the people of Ariège. This event requires considerable physical preparation to be successful.
