Some people have mixed feelings about them, others think they’re all right. My personal opinion: a mixed tanda is OK, as long as it makes sense. With some orchestras and singers there are so many good tracks you can use as a DJ, it really doesn’t make any sense to mix them with others. So I wouldn’t mix D’Arienzo with Mauré and Echagüe for instance, or Di Sarli with Rufino and Podestá. But there can be good reasons for a mixed tanda. Like a special occasion, or if you want to play a track by an orchestra and singer that only made very few recordings together. Or a specific track that’s rather difficult to combine with other recordings by the same orchestra. But I would say: Don’t overdo it. One or two mixed tandas during the milonga is fine, but please don’t show off all the eccentric combinations you can think of all the time. Now most orchestras recorded far more tangos than waltzes or milongas. And as a result, mixed tandas are a bit more common with waltzes or milongas than with tangos. Like for instance our mixed milonga tanda of this week. The idea for this tanda of the week started with ‘Milonga Sentimental’, a milonga, composed by Sebastián Piana with lyrics by Homero Manzi. ‘Milonga Sentimental’ was the first milonga-urbana, or milonga porteña as Piana called it. The urban milonga, as opposed to the existing milonga criolla. There are many recordings of Milonga Sentimental, varying from Francisco Canaro 1932 to, let’s say, Otros Aires 2005. But my favourite version – still – is by Mercedes Simone, La Dama del Tango. And this was actually the first recording of Milonga Sentimental as well, back in 1932. The second track is ‘Cacareando’. A popular, fun milonga with an equally clear habanera rhythm, and a moderate tempo. ‘Cacareando’ was composed by Antonio Sureda with lyrics by his brother Gerónimo. And recorded by Orquesta Típica Victor, with singer Carlos Lafuente, in 1933. Now Mercedes Simone had also recorded with OTV and Carabelli (basically the same orchestra), so from Simone to Orquesta Típica Victor is not such a big step – and the musical style matches quite well. One thing though, the lyrics of Cacareando are far from refined… So now we have Mercedes Simone and we have OTV with Lafuente –what will the third track be? An obvious choice could be another one by OTV: ‘Milonga de los Fortines’. Or possibly Edgardo Donato’s ‘Porteña Linda’ or ‘Cara Negra’, or something like Emilio Pellejero - ‘Mi vieja linda’ – a nice combination with Cacareando, in terms of the lyrics. Well, for this tanda of the week I chose a bit of a guilty pleasure: Feliciano Brunelli – ‘La naranja nació verde’, from 1943. Sung by Oscar Valeta. Music written by Rafael Rossi and lyrics by “Luis Mario”, a pseudonym of María Luisa Carnelli ; lyricist, writer and journalist. Brunelli was born in Marseille, France, with Italian parents who moved to Argentina in 1908. He played the piano and the accordion, instead of the bandoneon. He recorded some tangos, but mostly other rhythms, like waltzes, pasodobles, foxtrots and corridos. ‘La naranja nació verde’ is a track with a clear habanera rhythm, and perhaps somewhat silly lyrics. Anyway, it’s a song that always brings a smile to my face. And that makes the ‘mixed milonga tanda’ of this week: 1. Mercedes Simone – Milonga Sentimental 2. Orquesta Típica Victor & Carlos Lafuente – Cacareando 3. Feliciano Brunelli & Oscar Valeta – La naranja nació verde Enjoy! Please note: We do not own the music in this video.
