A lawsuit has been filed against nine people, five of whom are currently in custody, for allegedly shipping epilepsy medication from a pharmaceutical warehouse in Erzurum to Antalya and Istanbul by cargo, claiming to be trafficking or supplying narcotics or stimulants. Mahmut Uçar, President of the Erzurum 13th Regional Pharmacists' Chamber, stated that drug addicts often pose as patients to obtain these medications, saying, "We are also at risk. Patrols should be increased around on-duty pharmacies. I've been in the profession for 28 years, and I've never seen this much harassment, even for morphine." The Erzurum Provincial Police Department received a tip that T.Ö., an employee at a pharmaceutical warehouse, was illegally selling epilepsy medication. Following reports that T.Ö. had unpackaged the medication and shipped it, teams from the Narcotics Crimes Branch began monitoring the warehouse where the suspect worked. When the medication in question couldn't be found at T.Ö.'s workplace on February 3rd, courier companies near the pharmacy where T.Ö. worked were checked. T.Ö. was apprehended with a package he was planning to send from a courier company. A search revealed a total of 5,600 pills, each containing 400 pills, 14 pills each, all removed from their boxes. When invoices revealed a larger quantity, other courier companies were also investigated. It was determined that T.Ö. had sent two more boxes on the same day. It was revealed that T.Ö. was planning to send a total of 16,800 of these pills to Ö.Ö. in Istanbul and S.K. in Antalya. The investigation revealed that T.Ö. had allegedly sold medications from a different pharmacy to a pharmacy in Muş and then shipped them to sellers in Antalya and Istanbul. A criminal investigation into the seized medication determined that it contained the active ingredient, pregabalin, which is subject to a green prescription. THEY SOLD A 54-LIRA MEDICINE FOR 150 TL Nine people, including one woman, were detained in an investigation coordinated by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. T.Ö., the informant, explained everything from the procurement of the medication to its sale. It was learned that the medication, which costs 54 lira per box, was sold to drug addicts for 130 to 150 lira. T.Ö. claimed to have started this business after an offer from H.B., who worked at a different pharmaceutical warehouse. Based on his testimony, nine people were arrested in the operation, which included connections to Erzurum, Muş, Istanbul, and Antalya. UP TO 20 YEARS OF PRISON REQUESTED Among those detained as part of the investigation was A.Ö., who worked at the pharmacy in Muş where the medications were billed. H.S., who acted as an intermediary for the drugstore, Ö.A. in Istanbul, S.K. in Antalya, and H.B., the pharmaceutical warehouse purchasing manager in Erzurum, were arrested and imprisoned. Pharmaceutical warehouse employees T.Ö., D.Ö., E.B., and S.K. were released. In an indictment prepared by Public Prosecutor Melih Yıldırım, a case was filed against nine suspects at the 1st High Criminal Court on charges of "trafficking or supplying narcotic or stimulant substances," seeking prison sentences ranging from 5 years and 7 months to 19 years and 8 months. 297,000 TL PROFITS GENERATED The indictment, under the heading "Evaluation of Evidence," noted that the suspects formed a chain, received their share of the profits, and then transferred the money to another person. Consequently, they generated 297,000 TL in illegal income through this method. "I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS MUCH HARRASSMENT EVEN FOR MORPHINE" Mahmut Uçar, President of the Erzurum 13th Regional Pharmacists' Chamber, warned that these medications, which contain the active ingredient pregabalin, can cause death if used in high doses. Uçar, noting that the drug used for therapeutic purposes was placed on the green prescription list in 2019, issued the following warnings: "This active ingredient was initially discovered because it was beneficial for patients with epilepsy, or epilepsy. It was used for therapeutic purposes to prevent excessive energy transmission in nerves. Over time, they realized it was beneficial for nerve damage and other diseases. This type of damage was most common in diabetics. It was also found to be beneficial for joint pain. In the past, neurologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists, and orthopedists prescribed it. But recently, our government has seen this: it is being used as a recreational drug by substance addicts in many parts of the world. When substance addicts saw that anxiety was completely gone, they experienced hallucinations and delusions, felt very strong, and their self-confidence skyrocketed, they increased their dosage and used it. When government bodies realized that it was now being used as a recreational drug in society, it was granted the status of a narcotic, which pharmacists call a green prescription, in 2019. Its basis is not a drug as we know it today. It is ...
