Zhiyun Fiveray M40 vs SmallRig RM 40C - which is better?

So, in this video I want to show you the real differences of the compact LED video lights Zhiyun Fiveray M40 and SmallRig RM 40C, which now I am using for work projects. Even though they are very simialr in size, weight and power, they have some key differences that I present in my consumer test. 💡 Zhiyun Fiveray M40 – Strengths & Weaknesses ✅ Pros Bright output for size: With ~40 W and peak lux figures (~14,000 lux @ ~0.3 m), it’s surprisingly punchy for a pocket light. Simple physical controls: Dual wheels make adjusting brightness & color temp intuitive without menus. Very portable: Light and compact with a 360° adjustable stand. Good color fidelity: High CRI and TLCI suitable for photography & video. ❌ Cons Short battery life: Only about ~29 min at full power — often less in real scenarios. Bi-color only: No RGB modes or creative color effects. Limited accessories included: You’ll need magnetic modifiers or gels separately. No screen: No live readout; shows just basic status LEDs. 👉 Best if: You want a punchy bi-color fill/key light that’s ultra-simple to use and very portable. 🎨 SmallRig RM 40C – Strengths & Weaknesses ✅ Pros RGBWW capability: Full RGB color controls + very wide 2500–10,000 K range. Creative effects: 14 built-in lighting effects add scene/atmosphere options. Longer runtime: Larger battery gives ~55 min at full brightness. LCD display: Shows settings, making it easier to dial precise values on the fly. Included modifiers: Diffuser and grid for shaping light are typically included. Magnetic mounting: Easy quick placement on metal surfaces or mounts. ❌ Cons Lower raw “punch” at 1 m: Reported lux (4,670 @ 1 m) is lower compared with Zhiyun’s peak stats — although apples-to-apples differences in measurement distances matter. Plastic build feels cheaper (some reviews note) and magnet diffuser isn’t super strong. Fan noise: Cooling fan audible at higher outputs. 👉 Best if: You want RGB/color-creative lighting, longer untethered runtime, and more on-screen control. 📌 Verdict – Which to Choose? 🛠 For pure power & simplicity If your priority is bright, stable bi-color lighting and straightforward controls for photography/video setups — especially as a fill/key light — the Zhiyun Fiveray M40 is excellent. It’s portable and powerful relative to its size. 🎨 For versatility & creative color If you want full RGB lighting, creative effects, longer battery life, and a display for precise adjustments, then the SmallRig RM 40C stands out. 🧠 Quick Use-Case Tips 📍 Vlogging / YouTube: RM 40C for fun RGB accents + longer runtime. 📍 Portrait/Photo lighting: M40 for punchy bi-color fill. 📍 On-camera light: Both are pocketable, but RM 40C’s magnet/diffuser might be more flexible. 📍 Studio add-on lights: M40 works great as part of a multi-light setup.
