Kofi Annan (1938-2018): He was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. Yaa Asantewaa (c.1840-1921): She was the Queen Mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire, now part of modern-day Ghana. In 1900, she led the Ashanti war known as the War of the Golden Stool against British colonialism. Kwame Nkrumah (1909-1972): Nkrumah was a Ghanaian politician and revolutionary. He was the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana, leading the Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957. Esther Afua Ocloo (1919-2002): She was a Ghanaian entrepreneur and pioneer of microfinance. Ocloo was also a co-founder of Women's World Banking in 1976, advocating for the economic empowerment of women. Alice Annum (b. 1948): Also known as "Baby Jet," she is a retired Ghanaian sprinter who was the first woman to represent Ghana at the Olympics. Her personal best time in the 200 meters was 22.89 seconds, achieved at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Nana Ansah Sasraku: He was a king of Akwamu and played a significant role in the expansion of the Akwamu state during the late 17th century. Raphael Armattoe (1913-1953): He was a Ghanaian scientist, poet, and political activist. Armattoe was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948 and is known for his work on the Abochi drug against parasites. Ephraim Amu (1899-1995): Amu was a Ghanaian composer, musicologist, and teacher. He is celebrated for his contributions to Ghanaian music and for incorporating African themes and rhythms into his compositions.
