Cuban Grooving

Cuban Grooving is an original composition for saxophone quartet (SATB) weaving intricate latin rhythms together creating a stylised latin feel. It is ideally suited to ensembles of an advanced intermediate standard as part of a contest or festival performance. The arrangement is underpinned by a typically Cuban pushing bass line, played by the baritone saxophone, anticipating the next bar with syncopated inner lines played by the alto and tenor saxophones while the soprano melody line soars on top. The tenor saxophone takes over the melody in small sections and each instrument covers a large range. The arrangement features changing time signatures starting in 4/4 before a settling into a contrasting section of alternating 6/8 and 5/8 bars. The music returns to 4/4 as the tenor saxophone takes over the melody. The piece is ideal for a light interlude to give contrasting style in a concert with close attention to dynamics and articulation helping to make it a stand out performance.
