What makes a truly effective dropper for squid metal fishing? In recent years, various types of droppers have been released by different manufacturers. While color, size, and posture tend to receive the most attention, what is truly important? This time, we will explain the theory behind droppers in detail, including the development story of our new dropper released this year, "Grim Shiner V." The most important aspect of developing the Grim Shiner V was its slim shape. While the overall length of a dropper is often the focus, the slimness of its silhouette actually has a significant impact on catch rates. The origin of this idea was the "Plazuno," which has achieved remarkable results with spear squid and Japanese flying squid in recent years. Despite its simple shape, it can be surprisingly effective in certain situations. "Could we incorporate this idea into an Egi-type dropper?" That's how we started development five years ago. The first sample was a prototype that focused solely on a slim shape. Testing it in the Hokuriku region yielded overwhelmingly better results than any other dropper. However, in the water, insufficient buoyancy resulted in an unstable posture, meaning it wasn't a finished product. After further improvements, it was initially refined to have the same "tail-up" balance as typical squid jig droppers. However, a new problem arose: despite catching squid, the hook-up rate wasn't improving. With the Ocean Spear Exceed used in testing, preliminary bites were clearly visible, but the squid weren't hooking. The cause lay in the dropper's balance. Squid species like the Japanese flying squid (kensaki squid, yari squid, and surume squid) feed differently than the bigfin reef squid (aori squid). Therefore, the "tail-up" posture based on bigfin reef squid jigs isn't always optimal. The Grim Shiner V is designed to be slightly tail-down in still water. In actual ocean conditions, it maintains a nearly horizontal posture, achieving an ultra-slow fall. Furthermore, it was designed to facilitate hook-ups the moment a squid touches the jig.
