Long after midnight, one voice remained awake. The Last Watchman is a noir-inspired improvisation for tuba voice, performed on Yamaha Digital Piano. Part of the ongoing Noir Monologues series, this work unfolds at an unhurried pace, allowing the deep sonority of the tuba to become the narrator of a solitary nocturnal journey. The music moves through shifting landscapes of reflection, tonal ambiguity, and free improvisation, balancing stillness with quiet momentum. Unlike the brighter or more conversational voices heard elsewhere in the series, the tuba speaks with gravity and patience. Its dark timbre creates an atmosphere of contemplation, as though a lone figure were keeping watch while the city sleeps. A central section featuring crossed-hand playing introduces a different relationship between bass and treble, creating a fluid dialogue between registers before the music gradually gathers momentum toward its conclusion. Hints of free jazz appear throughout the monologue, not as a stylistic destination but as fleeting shadows within the broader noir landscape. The result is a work that remains suspended between certainty and uncertainty, movement and stillness.
