Prostate Artery Embolization: From Basics to Advanced

Prostate artery embolization is an emerging procedure utilized to treat BPH. This lecture was delivered by Sahil Mehta MD as part of the BIDMC Interventional Radiology Lecture Series to an international audience. It focuses on the technical and clinical elements of prostate artery embolization from the basics to the advanced for interventional radiology residents and trainees. Interventional radiologists will learn in this lecture will learn how to establish as PAE practice, the anatomical considerations of the prostatic artery, how to deal with collateral vessels, how to manage a patient pre and postoperatively. PAE or prostate artery embolization is highly effective in treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) caused by BPH. With the utilization of particles to block the arterial flow to the prostate gland, the gland shrinks in size and becomes less dense, thereby allowing freer passage of urine through the urethra. Studies in thousands of patients have shown it's a procedure with a very low complication rate, no sexual side effects and can be as effective as TURP.
