Grammar Grade 11 | Ch. 11, Lesson 85 — Parentheses, Brackets, and Ellipsis Points

Welcome back to Grammar Grade 11 — a complete, step-by-step walk through every fundamental rule of English grammar a high school junior needs to know. It's built for the SAT, but it's just as much about owning the grammar of everyday writing and speaking for life. The series moves in a clear chapter-and-lesson order, one lesson at a time. CHAPTER 11: PUNCTUATION — LESSON 85: PARENTHESES, BRACKETS & ELLIPSIS Three marks, three jobs. Parentheses enclose an aside or extra information that could be dropped entirely ("The results (see chart 2) were clear"). Brackets go INSIDE a quotation to add your own clarifying words or corrections ("He said the book '[the sequel]' was better"). Ellipsis points (...) show that words have been omitted from quoted material. Keep end punctuation outside the parentheses when the parenthetical is part of a larger sentence. What you'll learn • Parentheses enclose a droppable aside or extra info • Brackets add your own words inside a quotation • Ellipsis points (...) show omitted words in a quote • Where end punctuation goes with parentheses • Plus 6 practice questions Quick checks to remember • Extra aside — parentheses • Your insertion inside a quote — brackets • Something left out of a quote — ellipsis ...
