The Nishikawa town mayoral election, held on the 12th following the expiration of the incumbent's term, saw incumbent Taishi Sugano (47) of Yoshikawa defeat newcomer Toshio Oizumi (71) of Umi, former head of the Tohoku Labor Bank's prefectural branch, by 1095 votes, securing his re-election.
