Lake Drummond & Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a 112,000 acre seasonally flooded wetland forest located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The Dismal Swamp today is only a fraction of its original size. This forest once covered over 1 million acres. It is one of the most important wildlife habitats in the Mid Atlantic region. The over 3000 acre Lake Drummond is located nearly in the center of the refuge. It is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. The area has a rich human history as well, beginning some 13,000 years ago. During the Civil War, the swamp play a key role in the Underground Railroad. Some slaves stayed in the swamp and formed communities there. They were known as Maroons. Little is actually known about the Maroons. The Great Dismal Swamp could still be hiding many unknown mysteries in this remote and solitary forest. In this episode, we drive along Railroad Ditch, West Ditch, and the Interior Ditch to view Lake Drummond. We also stop to check out a few short boardwalk hiking trails along the way.
