Farewell, Macy's Philadelphia: End of an Era
Come along with me as I take one last look at the Macy's in Center City, Philadelphia before it closes permanently. Macy's opened in 2006, but the building that houses it has so much more history. The Wanamaker Building was constructed in 1910 and has operated continuously as a department store for the last 115 years, first (and most notably) as the flagship store of Wanamaker's until 1995, then as Hecht's from 1995-97, then as Lord & Taylor from 1997-2006, and finally as Macy's from 2006-25. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, so its character will be preserved, but its future is unclear. The owners want to turn it into a mixed-use property with retail, apartments, and more, but we'll have to wait and see if those plans come to fruition. #macys #philadelphia #closing
