Located near Ticknall, this "unstately home" completely subverts the traditional country estate experience with its famously preserved state of gentle decline and raw, authentic history. ​Sun-Drenched Walled Gardens ​Our day began in the historic walled gardens, which were looking absolutely spectacular in the brilliant British sunshine. The bright summer light perfectly illuminated the faded glasshouses, the iconic domed Orangery, and the vibrant flowerbeds bursting with seasonal colour. Strolling through these tranquil, sun-kissed grounds felt like stepping directly into a living watercolor painting. ​A Fresh Perspective: The New House Route ​Heading inside the baroque mansion, we were thrilled to discover that Calke Abbey has introduced a brand-new visitor route through the house! This clever layout completely reinvents the experience. It grants access to previously hidden corridors and secret rooms that regular visitors haven't been able to see before. ​Even better, the new trail guides you past familiar rooms but from entirely different angles. This fresh perspective shines a whole new light on Calke’s eclectic, eccentric collections—from the taxidermy display cases to the famously claustrophobic rooms—giving the entire interior a fascinating, revitalized appearance. ​By Order of the Peaky Blinders! ​For television and film buffs, there is an extra layer of excitement in the air. Calke Abbey’s moody, unrestored interiors and historic stableyards recently served as a major filming location for the highly anticipated Netflix movie, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man! Walking through the atmospheric passageways, the scullery, and Tommy Shelby’s on-screen writing room (the Schoolroom), you can instantly feel the cinematic grit and drama of the Shelby empire.
