CHACRINHA FARM Valença - RJ #oldfarm28 1860 📌Support this channel to gain access to the following benefits:    / @fazendasantigas   Manoel Pereira de Souza Barros acquired two land grants from Joaquim José dos Santos in the mid-1840s, but it took some time for him to permanently settle with his family on the land. During the 1850s and 1860s, Captain Souza Barros developed his farms with coffee cultivation. Residing on the Campo Alegre Farm, however, he did not abandon Chacrinha. On the latter, which already had a dwelling house and mills built by Santos in the early 19th century, Souza Barros maintained a sugarcane mill for the production of rum and sugar, still important commodities, including as a means of exchange. The Chacrinha Farm was reserved for his namesake son, who replaced a modest dwelling house built by Santos. The current headquarters of the Chacrinha Farm began to be built in the late 1860s and was completed in 1881, the same year that Manoel Pereira de Souza Barros was granted the title of Baron of Vista Alegre, crowning the peak of his social ascension. The baron inherited 234 slaves from his father, and it is known that this number increased. Abolition coincided with the month of ripe coffee, so a race against time arose for many farmers. The 1888 harvest was compromised, as many had sold the coffee on the plant. There was a run on the banks and commission houses. With the prospect of losing everything he had gained and with his health weakened by heart complications, the Baron of Vista Alegre died in 1891, at the age of 42. The Chacrinha Farm, which was mortgaged, was acquired by the Esteves Brothers and Co., and without knowing the real reason for the dissolution of the Esteves' rural assets, the farm was auctioned again by the Bank of Brazil in 1901. Chacrinha was managed by several owners over the years, undergoing only one major restoration, which was completed in 1987.
