Nick Marzock Video Blog Closer by Kings of Leon is one of my favorite songs that they wrote. They wrote the lyrics so well to match the feeling that the music is conveying. It is a very haunting and dark song and expresses the loneliness that he was feeling when he wrote it. The song is the opening track of their fourth studio album entitled "Only by the Night" and starts with the signature loop track played by the bass guitar being manipulated by an octave shifting pedal. I was obviously not utilizing a bass guitar or an octave shifting pedal, but underneath the camera I did have a piece of technology that was providing all the effects that you can hear on my acoustic. Yes, this IS a live recording and did not use ANY overdubbing or after effects once it was recorded... everything you hear is coming from my Line 6 M9 Stompbox Modeler pedal. I used an intense digital delay with an extremely long decay for the bass loop and arpeggio lines that establish the bass, looping both in succession with the looper function on the M9. I also switched in and out of a cave reverb for the lead electric cries in between verses and during the chorus. I love covering Closer by Kings of Leon. I feel that my voice is very similar to Caleb Followill's voice in that high register when it starts to get raspy, although I do not do the song's power justice with this acoustic version. Closer is still one of my top favorite songs by Kings of Leon and is a huge inspiration for songwriting to me, as it is the paradigm illustration of how to set a mood with the music that matches the words you sing.
