ALLA TURCA (TURKISH MARCH) by Mozart | ABRSM 2025 & 2026 Grade 8 A1 Piano Tutorial
A:1 – Alla Turca (Third movement from Sonata in A, K. 331) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) Note from ABRSM This Allegretto, sometimes known as the 'Turkish March' or 'Turkish Rondo', reflects the sound of Ottoman janissary bands with their exhilarating combination of drums, cymbals, bells and brass, designed to strike fear into the heart of the enemy. Some Viennese pianos of the period even had a janissary pedal to replicate these distinctive sounds. The piece is a good-humoured, bravura exploration of the percussive, ringing tones of the piano, its bright ornamented chordal episodes contrasting with the swiftly running scalic passages of the middle section. You may want to explore slightly arpeggiating the RH chords in bars 97-8, 103-104 and 116-117 to recreate the tambourine-like sound typical of the janissary pedal. Sources: autograph MS (bars 90-end; remainder lost), from collection of Antonio de Almeida, Lisbon; first edition, as no. 2 of Trois sonates pour le clavecin ou pianoforte composes par W. A. Mozart. Oeuvre VI (Vienna: Artaria, 1784). Note from channel Difficulty evaluation (for Grade 8): 8/10 Often referred to as the "Turkish March" or "Turkish Rondo", this iconic movement was inspired by the lively rhythms and textures of Ottoman janissary bands, known for their use of drums, bells, and cymbals. Viennese pianos during Mozart’s time were sometimes equipped with a special "janissary pedal" to imitate these sounds—an early sign of the instrument's theatrical potential. Marked Allegretto, this movement should maintain a poised tempo that allows for both clarity and brilliance—around 110–120 beats per minute is ideal. Despite its popularity, the musical interest lies not in speed but in character and precision. Each articulation and ornament should be delivered with flair, balance, and lightness. From bars 5–16, the playful thirds in the right hand require special attention. Voicing the top note clearly will help convey the light-hearted, sparkling energy of this passage. Before increasing the tempo, practise these bars hands separately, especially to develop fingertip control and a supple wrist. Bars 19–24 and 64–88 are identical, as are bars 25–32 and 57–64. These repetitions can be rehearsed more sparingly, but offer opportunities for variety in articulation or voicing when repeated in performance. The most technically demanding section begins at bar 88 and runs through to bar 125. Here, right-hand fingerwork becomes the focus. Practise slowly with metronome and shape the phrases carefully, maintaining evenness and avoiding stiffness. The left hand acts primarily as support—arpeggiated figures on the first beat should aid with rhythmic grounding and synchronization, not hinder fluency. Throughout the movement, rhythmic clarity and elegant articulation are essential. This is a brilliant and theatrical work, but also one that rewards attention to detail. Imagination and taste should shine through in your interpretation—Mozart’s wit is always best delivered with poise rather than force. #pianogradepathway #allaturca #turkishmarch
