The Plague Descends

Sorry for the delay on this one – I've been quite busy with grad school and, more importantly, Not Having a Piano. Huge thanks to everyone who's been supporting me nonetheless; it makes me so happy to see people enjoying this project. I'll keep at it. This song takes place directly after The House of the Living. They sing in unison at first, starting slow and then building.] HARUSPEX/BACHELOR: The voice is growing nearer, this warning in my mind. HARUSPEX: In all of father’s writings, BACHELOR: In all of this confusion, HARUSPEX / BACHELOR: There’s an answer I divine. HARUSPEX / BACHELOR: Time is pressing onwards, the bells already chimed; BACHELOR: I'll devise some vaccination, HARUSPEX: I will make a panacea, HARUSPEX / BACHELOR: and I'll turn the tide in time! [Healers look at each other and meet eyes for the first/only time, then move briskly in opposite directions, pulling on protective gloves, etc. as BACHELOR heads for the Kains and HARUSPEX for the Abattoir. TRAGEDIANS swap out the set pieces as the characters move and the song progresses.] HARUSPEX / BACHELOR: Measures must be taken, the people must be warned; the leaders must take action here before the plague takes form! [Both healers stop walking and face audience to sing the chorus while TRAGEDIANS assemble door to Abattoir for HARUSPEX and door to the Crucible for BACHELOR.] HARUSPEX / BACHELOR: I'll find a way, I'll beat this nightmare back all I lack is a moment to spare. It's not too late; if I protect what's pure, [DANIIL looks to the Polyhedron, ARTEMY to Murky's train car?] I'll close the door on a desolate fate... Just wait. [On the last word, both abruptly start moving again. Daniil opens the door to the Crucible and talks animatedly to Georgiy, Artemy does likewise with Oyun at the Abattoir. They're inaudible below the music at first, just miming a heated conversation.] BOTH: Tragedy's upon us; it's worse than what we feared. A murderer is out there, and you must not let him near! Don't stay your hand, we've not a blink to spare don't you dare lead your gazes astray! I don't have time to play these childish games BOTH: we'll end in flames if you don't let me change their fate. [SABUROV has been standing in the shadows, looking contemplatively at the two agitated men. Clara hovers beside him.] CLARA: Don't tell me these fools don't understand; a plague cannot be fought with simple plans. If there is a way for us to rescue the day, it's with these hands. ALL: There's no escape except to stand and fight this hopeless blight, this disease with no shape. This town will die before the seasons turn, before we learn if there's some way to stay / CLARA: if there's some way to keep you alive.
