Kio Kio

Set on the remote Anaa Atoll in French Polynesia, Kio Kio tells the inspiring true story of how a small island community, led by its children, revived an ancient tradition to save their cherished bonefish and their way of life. At the heart of this transformation is Indifly, a nonprofit dedicated to using fly fishing as a tool for conservation and community empowerment. Faced with dwindling job opportunities and a declining fish population, the children of Anaa took a bold step: they proposed reintroducing the Rāhui, a traditional Polynesian fishing ban during spawning season, to protect their beloved Kio Kio. With support from Indifly’s scientific research and conservation efforts, the community embraced the idea, revitalizing both their fishery and their future. The film highlights Indifly’s crucial role in translating ecological data into sustainable action, ultimately sparking a thriving fly fishing ecotourism economy. Families found new livelihoods, children returned home with purpose, and the island preserved its cultural and environmental heritage. Kio Kio is a powerful testament to the resilience of a people and the possibility of change when conservation is rooted in community.
