The Third Generation of Video Game Systems: Nintendo Dominates, Sega Begins, Atari Tries
The Third Generation of Home Console games was, for so many of us, where it truly began. The North American home console market had declined 97%, but Nintendo had the vision and gumption to try and change the world. Their Famicom became a massive hit in Japan, and after overcoming numerous obstcules – including skeptical retailers, deeply cynical customers, and, you know, racism – the Nintendo Entertainment System would own the world, setting the stage for the video games we know and love today. At the same time, the seeds of future console wars were being planted. After numerous false starts, Sega made a hit with the Master System, and while they didn’t match Nintendo's success in this generation, they were setting the stage for later. Other former giants tried – and mostly failed. Atari, Commodore, Epoch and more created systems, but only the Atari 7800 made a dent on the market – just barely.
