Barbuda, c’était le jour où il fallait y aller ! « Black Lion 130 »
#130 If we had to choose one day, it would undoubtedly be this one! 28 miles, 15 knots Northeast, close-hauled. Having resigned ourselves to Barbuda being excluded from our circumnavigation due to the strong winds of the past few days, we are savoring the unexpected! In 30 meters of water, and despite the current, Black Lion is being handled without complaint. Its skipper is putting his heart and soul into it, and not just into controlling the boat. Through the viewfinder of his cameras, he wants to immerse his audience in the sailing experience. To give them sensations, to convey emotions, to let them feel even the spray… and to carry them from one tack to the next in the magnetic blue of a generous voyage. The discreet island almost reminds us of the Tuamotu archipelago. Even the entrance, through a maze of reefs, is navigated just like there, with the help of the sun. Gravnor Bay, 90 centimeters below our keels, Blacky hovers above aquatic dunes teeming with a multitude of tropical species. Even though I'm feeling much better, it's still too soon for me to go and observe them myself. Besides, my other half can see that I'm feeling better! I've got my two left hands back! The moment I start tidying up, my clumsiness becomes my trademark again! The crashing waves make the windward coast sparkle with character! Each breaker on the limestone, blackened by time, contrasts magnificently with the generous blue of the ocean and the glossy green of the sea grape trees. This display of power is just a glimpse of what must have struck this island during one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the North Atlantic, Irma. Four years later, the scars speak volumes about the violence that we hardly dare mention! The mere memory of Erica in New Caledonia, a storm in a lower category, remains terrifying, so how can we even imagine winds of 360 kilometers per hour? Nothing can withstand such force, yet that doesn't deter investors from rebuilding luxury hotels and restaurants at Coco Point. The opportunity must be incredibly tempting to dare to take the risk again! But how can one resist such beauty? From one end to the other, the sand stretches out, wild horses graze on the creeping plants, and we are there to seize the moment! The beach, the stallions, the emerald water, and in the distance, Black Lion… The scene is simply perfect!
