At the end of the 16th century, in the jungles of Antioquia, near the Nechí River, there was a place where the African population defied the Spanish Empire. Before 1810, before Bolívar, before the battles we learned about in school, there were other liberators. Women and men who refused to be slaves and founded free territories amidst the gold mines. To delve deeper into this fascinating story, we have invited Paola Vargas Arana, PhD in History, to discuss her article entitled “The Uprising of the African Diaspora in the Mines of Antioquia and the Creation of the Palenque of Nechí (1580-1648).” She reveals that this stronghold, this palenque, resisted for more than five decades.
