The German government promises tax relief but is actually carrying out a massive redistribution of wealth. Reiner Holznagel, president of the German Taxpayers Federation, bluntly explains in an interview how the state promises citizens money with one hand while simultaneously taking it from their pockets with the other. The figures speak for themselves: A mechanical engineer with a gross annual income of €75,000 will face an additional burden of over €862 in 2027, while an automotive engineer could see up to €5,000 in additional taxes by 2031. At the same time, according to plans by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, people with a gross income of €120,000 or more will be considered "wealthy" and will be taxed more heavily – a redistribution that Holznagel sharply criticizes. Particularly explosive: Research into the electric car subsidy reveals that a strikingly high number of applications for luxury vehicles like Tesla, BMW, and Porsche are coming from the lowest income bracket. The suspicion is that wealthy families are sending their grandparents, who have small pensions, ahead of them to secure government-subsidized electric cars. Three-quarters of the subsidized vehicles also come from foreign manufacturers – so much for supporting the German auto industry.
