FORMA MUSICAL. A) EL MOTIVO: PERSPECTIVA CLÁSICA

Form is a concept that has evolved over time. There was a time when form wasn't important; phrases flowed naturally, following the qualities of speech. I'm referring to Gregorian chant. But in the Classical period, the era of the pursuit of beauty through form, musicians like Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven focused their attention on formal structure, giving meaning and value to each of its elements as if they were pieces of a building. In this way, form became crystallized, reaching a standard of perfection appreciable through the ideas of balance, proportion, and function. However, in later periods, form was questioned, interpreted, and transformed in a particular way by each composer. Nevertheless, in popular culture—that is, outside of academic circles—the form established by the Classical composers remained relevant, as we can see by analyzing a popular song today. The Beatles' "Hey Jude," for example, clearly adheres to the classic format, not only in its form but also in its harmonic structure.
