Will It Skate? Making a Skateboard the Wrong Way (Part 1 of 3)
Welcome to Will It Skate?, a new series from The Garage Skateboard Factory where we test ridiculous skateboard ideas to find out if they actually work. For our first experiment, we're attempting to build a skateboard using only cross grain veneer, something that should not work. Traditional skateboard construction relies on long grain wood for strength, so this deck breaks one of the biggest rules in skateboard manufacturing. Instead of using continuous long grain plies, we cut multiple cross grain sheets into 9.5 inch sections, rotated them, and taped them together to create long grains with staggered seams similar to a brick pattern. The goal is simple: see if this unusual layup can become a rideable skateboard. In Part 1, we explain the experiment, prepare the veneer, tape every section together, glue the layup, and get everything into the press. In Part 2, we'll pull the deck from the press, find out if the experiment actually worked, then shape and finish the board. In Part 3, we'll put it through real skateboarding and durability tests to answer the only question that matters... Will It Skate? If you enjoy handmade skateboards, woodworking, DIY projects, manufacturing, engineering experiments, and garage builds, you're in the right place.
