Nestled in the tranquility of Prosto di Piuro, just a few kilometers from Chiavenna, stands the magnificent Palazzo Vertemate Franchi, one of Lombardy's most fascinating Renaissance residences. Built in the second half of the 16th century by the brothers Guglielmo and Luigi Vertemate Franchi, wealthy merchants from Piuro, it is the only building of their vast estate to have survived the devastating landslide of 1618, which destroyed the ancient village. Interiorly, spread over three floors, the palace boasts extraordinary frescoes, coffered wooden ceilings, and exquisite stüe, the traditional wood-paneled rooms. Outside, the vegetable garden, vineyard, chestnut grove, and ancient farm buildings that once made the property completely self-sufficient still remain.
