Bamba Wassoulou Groove - Mali Live at Afrika Festival Hertme - The Netherlands date of performance - July 6, 2024 Moussa Diabaté - guitar Mamadou Diabaté - guitar, vocals Aboubacar Diombana - bass Maguett Diop - drums Ousmane Diakité - lead vocals Bamba Wassoulou Groove were originally formed to honour the legacy of the late Malian guitar legend Zani Diabaté, a prime mover in mixing traditional styles with rock energy in the ‘80s with his Super Djata Band. Percussionist Bamba Dembelé, who played in the Super Djata Band before joining the legendary Super Rail Band, put together Bamba Wassoulou Groove with fellow Super Rail musicians guitarist Moussa Diabaté and drummer Maguett Diop in 2013, two years after Zani Diabaté passed away. Completing the line-up with pick of a new generation of players, they quickly established themselves as a major force. Dembelé led them through two albums and international tours before passing away in 2018. Now Moussa Diabaté is at the helm, his dazzling technique and soulful soloing ably supplemented by the psychedelic exploration of second guitarist Mamadou Diabaté. De Malinese groep Bamba Wassoulou Groove is de eerste act die wij mogen bekendmaken voor het Afrika Festival Hertme 2024. Wij zijn blij dat wij deze groep weer op zaterdagavond mogen verwelkomen, nadat zij in 2016 bij ons al een prachtig optreden gaven. Bamba Wassoulou Groove werd oorspronkelijk opgericht ter ere van de erfenis van de overleden Malinese gitaarlegende Zani Diabaté, een pionier in het mixen van traditionele stijlen met rockenergie in de jaren '80 met zijn Super Djata Band. Percussionist Bamba Dembelé, die in de Super Djata Band speelde voordat hij zich bij de legendarische Super Rail Band voegde, richtte Bamba Wassoulou Groove op met collega-Super Rail-muzikanten, gitarist Moussa Diabaté en drummer Maguett Diop in 2013, twee jaar na het overlijden van Zani Diabaté. Door de line-up compleet te maken met een nieuwe generatie spelers, vestigden ze zich al snel als een belangrijke kracht. Dembelé leidde hen door twee albums en internationale tournees voordat hij in 2018 overleed. Nu staat Moussa Diabaté aan het roer, zijn oogverblindende techniek en soulvolle solowerk worden op kundige wijze aangevuld met het psychedelische gitaarspel van tweede gitarist Mamadou Diabaté.
