Master Portuguese Directions Like a Local with These Simple Tips

Rather than asking, we're giving directions today! If you already have or are going to move to Portugal, after you get familiar with the area, you'll find that you'll often be explaining in Portuguese where your address is to lost curriers from out of town. Granted, this happens a little more if you live in a small or more rural area, but not always. In any case, the stress of this is always compounded because the interaction is sudden and over THE PHONE. But fear not! I'm going to walk you through this and tell you all the things you can say so you can be ready! Don't worry if you don't live in Portugal, you can still practice with your current address, imagining you have a new postman who is Portuguese ;) COLOURED LETTERS REPRESENT LIAISONS AND ELISIONS The red letters represent elisions which are vowels: 1 - that are pronounced very quickly and subtly or not at all ("estar" is a good example of this) 2 – with very reduced duration making it appear that they are not being pronounced at all. (The pronunciation of the preposition “de” and the “ue” in words like “queria” are good examples of this) And green and purple represent the liaisons, which are vowels or letters that: 1 – merge words together (green); 2 - change their original sound due to the merge (purple); These elisions and liaisons happen in the spoken form only and can vary greatly depending on formality, speed of speech, and also on regional accent. Don't feel like you need to learn how to do all these elisions and liaisons from the start as they come with time and experience with speaking Portuguese. In general, native speakers don't really notice they even speak like this! I like to point them out because I feel they are so important for learners to be aware of to improve comprehension. It's what ALL my students struggle with – ESPECIALLY in the ALGARVE ;) watch this video for a detailed explanation and demonstration    • Portuguese is a Stress-Timed Language   Find the written lesson here https://thesoundsofportuguese.com/dir... #directionsinportuguese #learneuropeanportuguese #portuguesewithadelina 0:00 Intro 0:55 The Lost Courier 2:19 Find The Courier 3:10 Write Directions to your address 3:27 Most Common Verbs Used 3:44 Por and Para 4:01 Present or Imperative 4:21 Left/Right/Up/Down 6:18 Using Ordinals 7:26 When you see... 8:16 More Directional Vocabulary 9:05 Asking for Directions
