CENTCOM stated that the operation was in response to alleged Iranian attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington considered these actions a threat to freedom of international navigation. Furthermore, attacks on commercial vessels were also seen as endangering global energy supplies. Iranian state media reported that US strikes hit the islands of Qeshm, Bandar Abbas, and Sirik. Several civilians were reportedly injured by shrapnel. However, there have been no reports of casualties. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister condemned the operation.
