On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite. It was approximately the size of a beach ball. It transmitted a steady beep for twenty-one days, then went silent. In the sixty-eight years since, humans have placed over eleven thousand objects into orbit. Of those, roughly half are still up there. Of the rest, some came back as planned. Some did not.
