Addressing the shortage of space and fodder for raising cows in Kashmir, the Animal Husbandry Department and SKUAST Kashmir have introduced the Saanen goat from Switzerland. Also known as the "Milk Queen," this goat is small in size and capable of producing 3 to 7 liters of milk, equivalent to that of a cow. Its milk is odorless and A2 milk, which helps increase platelet counts in dengue and chemotherapy patients. A three-year trial is currently underway at the research center involving 20 goats and four male animals. While local Bakarwal goats produce only half a liter of milk, the Saanen goat could be an excellent alternative for farmers and urban residents by producing more milk with less fodder and less space.
