Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem on June 4 rejected a conditional ceasefire agreement announced by Lebanese and Israeli envoys, demanding a comprehensive ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon. He also warned that attacks on northern Israel would resume if Israeli troops remained present on Lebanese territory. Lebanon has been embroiled in the regional crisis since early March when Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel. Since then, fighting has continuously escalated along the border. The ceasefire announced on April 17 has also proven ineffective, with both sides accusing each other of violations, while Israeli troops have deployed deep into Lebanese territory and Hezbollah has continued retaliatory attacks. Speaking on television, Qassem asserted that Hezbollah would only accept a comprehensive ceasefire that would not allow Israel to continue military operations. He criticized direct negotiations with Israel, stating that Hezbollah's withdrawal under the current proposal would amount to "surrender and defeat." The Hezbollah leader also declared that settlements in northern Israel would not be safe if villages in Lebanon continued to be bombed, destroyed, and civilians continued to be killed. These statements came amid increased military pressure from Israel. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the Israeli army would continue ground and air operations against Hezbollah targets, while maintaining the right to launch attacks on Beirut if Israel continued to be attacked. Katz emphasized that Israel retains "freedom of action," with US support, to respond to attacks on Israeli territory and residential areas. According to a statement following the meeting in Washington, the two sides agreed to study a model of a “pilot zone,” in which the Lebanese army would have complete control and would not allow any non-state armed forces to operate. While diplomatic efforts continue, fighting on the ground continues to cause further casualties. In southern Lebanon, the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said a blue beret soldier was killed and two others wounded after one of its bases was attacked overnight. The Serbian government confirmed the deceased soldier was Serbian. This is the seventh peacekeeping soldier killed since the current conflict erupted in March. Israel accused Hezbollah of being responsible for the incident. However, Hezbollah denied the accusation and offered condolences to the family of the deceased Serbian soldier. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, through his spokesperson, condemned the attack and called for an investigation to determine the responsibility of those involved. On the Lebanese side, President Joseph Aoun continued to express support for the proposal announced in Washington, calling it the last chance to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire. However, the tough reaction from Hezbollah shows that reaching a consensus remains a significant obstacle. Sharing Hezbollah's stance, the commander of Iran's Quds Force, Esmail Qaani, declared that Israel must withdraw to its pre-war positions in Lebanon, considering this a minimum condition for any peaceful solution. On June 4th, the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported that more than 40 locations in the south and east of the country were attacked. The Lebanese Ministry of Health stated that at least eight people were killed in the Israeli airstrikes, including five in eastern Lebanon and three near the southern city of Tyre. Israel also reported further losses. The Israeli army confirmed one soldier killed in fighting in southern Lebanon. According to an Israeli military official, the soldier was killed by a missile fired by Hezbollah. This brings the total number of Israeli soldiers killed on the Lebanese front since the outbreak of the current conflict to 27, in addition to one civilian contractor.
