In this video, I take a drive into one of the most unique and misunderstood parts of Hawaii — from the energy of the Makuʻu Farmers Market, to the historic town of Pāhoa, the Star of the Sea Painted Church, lava-affected neighborhoods from the 2018 eruption, the famous Red Road tree tunnel, and the black sand coastline created by the volcano itself. This isn’t the Hawaii most visitors come to see. But it might be the one that stays with you the longest. PLACES WE VISITED Makuʻu Farmers Market — Every Sunday, this is where Puna comes alive. Local vendors, fresh food, and real community energy unlike anything you'll find at a resort. https://www.instagram.com/explore/loc... Pahoa Town — Part Old West, part rainforest, part Hawaii. One of the most unique small towns in the entire state, with original boardwalks dating back to the sugar and timber era of the early 1900s. Star of the Sea Painted Church — Built in 1927 by Belgian missionary Father Evarist Gielen, who painted every inch of the interior himself using house paint mixed with linseed oil. In 1990 it was moved on rollers to escape an advancing lava flow. One of the most remarkable and unexpected places on the Big Island. https://www.hvcb.org/listing/star-of-... Leilani Estates — In 2018 the ground here opened up. Over 700 homes were destroyed in four months. And somehow… people stayed. Red Road (Highway 137) — Twelve miles of jungle canopy, black coastline, and zero traffic. One of the most photogenic drives in Hawaii. Pohoiki Black Sand Beach (Isaac Hale Beach Park) — Created by the same 2018 eruption that destroyed Leilani. Brand new land. Brand new beach. Warm thermal pools, lifeguards on duty, and some of the best surfing in Puna.
