Yoga nidra means yogic sleep, the ancient art of resting the body completely while the mind stays softly awake. This is a full, classical 12 hour guided yoga nidra, the kind the yogis actually teach, nothing shortened. About 28 minutes of guidance takes you through the complete practice, then gentle 432 Hz music over a black screen carries you through the night. The tradition says a single hour of yoga nidra can rest you as deeply as four hours of ordinary sleep. This follows the eight-stage method of Swami Satyananda Saraswati (Bihar School of Yoga): you settle into stillness, plant a sankalpa (a short personal resolve), move through the full rotation of consciousness (the voice names each part of the body in turn while you rest your awareness there), then breath awareness, the feeling of opposite sensations, an inner visualization, the return of your sankalpa, and finally either a gentle waking or a quiet drift into sleep. The modern "non-sleep deep rest," or NSDR, that you may have heard of is a stripped-down version of this very practice. How to use it: lie on your back, somewhere warm, and try not to move once you begin. Headphones optional. If you fall asleep, that is completely fine; if you can, stay lightly with the voice on the edge between waking and sleep. Let it play all night.
