Linden is pressured by the university’s new leadership to step aside, while his children and colleagues present their own conflicting views: a son pursuing worldly success, a daughter devoted to service in the new NHS, another chasing artistic dreams, and others wrestling with disillusionment. At the heart of it all stands Linden, a man unwilling to abandon his belief in education, integrity, and principle, even as the world moves on without him. A moving and thoughtful play, The Linden Tree is both an intimate family drama and a wider reflection on post-war Britain—its hopes, divisions, and search for meaning in a rapidly changing society.
