Winterbourne Care Home - Bristol

Winterbourne View was a private psychiatric hospital in Hambrook, South Gloucestershire, England, that operated from 2006 to 2011. Designed for the assessment and treatment of people with learning disabilities and autism, the facility became the focus of a national scandal when systemic, institutionalized abuse was exposed. In May 2011, the BBC’s Panorama documentary program aired "Undercover Care: The Abuse Exposed". An undercover reporter, working as a support worker, secretly filmed horrific physical, psychological, and emotional abuse inflicted on vulnerable residents by staff. The footage showed patients being taunted, slapped, pinned to the floor, soaked with cold water, and forcibly restrained or drugged.
