Crowland Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Lincolnshire, and around eight miles northeast of Peterborough, is the town of Crowland. Geographically, Crowland is situated on the northern side of the Lincolnshire-Cambridgeshire border, surrounded by the marshy Fenland, which historically made it an island prior to its draining. In 699 AD St Guthlac landed on the island of Crowland seeking the life of a hermit. People were drawn here from around the country to seek out his spiritual guidance. He also provided Prince Æthelbald refuge from his cousin Ceolred. Guthlac predicted that Æthelbald would become King of Mercia without any bloodshed, and in return, Æthelbald pledged to build Guthlac an abbey once he became King. Guthlac died in 714 AD, but after Æthelbald finally gained the crown in 716, he began building Crowland Abbey, dedicating it to St Guthlac. In the 9th century the Vikings sacked Crowland Abbey and slaughtered the local community. The abbey was refounded in the reign of King Edred in the 10th century, but was burnt down in 1091. A third abbey was built in 1109, but this too was destroyed by fire, in its case in the 12th century. The fourth and final abbey survived until Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. The monastic buildings were destroyed, but the abbey church survived, with the aid of various restoration projects from the 18th century to the 20th century, and serves as the parish church to this day. Between 1360 and 1390 Trinity Bridge was constructed. Replacing an earlier wooden structure from the Anglo-Saxon era, this unique three-way stone bridge was once used as the crossing point of a confluence of three rivers. These rivers have long since been diverted, leaving the structure as, essentially, a bridge over nothing. Whilst there is no railway station in Crowland, the town is served by a bus service which runs between Peterborough and Spalding. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
