Operation Trikora (short for Operation Tri Komando Rakyat) was a military operation launched by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to counter Dutch colonialism in West Irian (Papua). This operation was launched by President Sukarno in December 1961, with Major General Suharto as Commander of the Mandala Command. This operation ended with the defeat of the Indonesian military in several areas of Dutch New Guinea and the transfer of West Irian to Indonesia by the Dutch through the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA).
