In his first year, he recorded 14 wins (6 losses) and was named Rookie of the Year. After mastering the cutball, he threw a no-hitter in 2002. In 2004, he led the team in wins (17) and contributed to the team's league championship, winning the Sawamura Award and MVP. In 2006, he also led the team in wins (17). In 2009, he joined the Atlanta Braves in the MLB, where he was a part of the starting rotation. He returned to Chunichi Dragons in 2012 and left the team at the end of 2015.
