Salford Walk: Salford Quays & MediaCityUK【4K】
Located in the county of Greater Manchester, and just next to the city of Manchester, separated by the River Irwell, is the city of Salford. The subject of this walk is Salford Quays and the famous MediaCityUK area. Geographically, this is situated around two miles west of central Salford. The history of the area goes back to 1894 when Queen Victoria opened Salford Docks, as it was known at the time. The company responsible for its construction was the Manchester Ship Canal Company. In 1903 Pomona Docks opened just to the east. These two were known collectively as Manchester Docks, which at its peak was the third-busiest port in Britain. By the 1970s the docks had fallen into decline before ultimately closing in 1982, with around 3,000 jobs disappearing as a consequence. In 1983 Salford City Council acquired parts of the docks from the Manchester Ship Canal Company, and in 1985 the Salford Quays Development Plan was launched. Over the following years, the area was regenerated, and officially rebranded from Salford Docks to Salford Quays. In 2003 the idea of decentralising the British broadcasting industry, whilst at the same time stimulating economic growth in the north of England, was first proposed. In 2004 the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) revealed plans to move several departments to Greater Manchester, with Salford Quays being the chosen location. In 2007 construction of MediaCityUK began, which officially opened in 2011. During that same year, Independent Television (ITV) also moved some of its operations to MediaCityUK, including the production of soap opera Coronation Street. Since 1999 Salford Quays tram stop has served the area as part of Manchester Metrolink - the light railway that runs throughout Greater Manchester. In 2010, MediaCityUK tram stop was added. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
