Squat For Lower Body Gains http://www.SeanNal.com/articles/train... Ever since man first begin strength training, squats have always been considered as the ultimate lower body exercise. There's no doubt about it - squats are an awesome exercise and produce a ton of valuable muscle building, strength gaining and performance boosting benefits. Second on the list of popular muscle building quad exercises is the leg press. Although a machine exercise, the leg press also effectively trains the lower body and can produce both significant size and strength gains when done properly. But what about the leg press vs. squat? Which one is better between the two, and which one should you ultimately focus on? The problem with this "leg press vs. squat" question is that most people want to turn it into a black and white, "all or nothing" answer when it really doesn't need to be that way. In reality, although both exercises are similar in nature, they each have their own specific benefits and drawbacks depending on the situation and should simply be viewed as individual tools to use in your training. If I had to pick ONE between the squat vs. leg press then I'd certainly go with the squat, however, most lifters will be using a variety of exercises for their lower body, so this really doesn't matter in the big picture. Leg presses are actually a very effective exercise and work especially well for those with poor body structure for squatting (long femurs) since it allows for less lower back stress and more direct quad stress. They also tax the cardio system and CNS less heavily than squats and work well to provide additional volume for the legs without burn out or excessive fatigue, or if one wants to perform higher reps. Another benefit of the leg press vs. squat is that it is typically less stressful to the lower back and can be used a good squat alternative for those with injuries. So, squats or leg presses? In the end, most people will be best off using a combination of both, and the whole idea of squats vs. leg presses is really irrelevant in the big picture.
