PAIR Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Zhigang SUO (2 Jun 2026)

Speaker: Prof. Zhigang SUO • Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences • Member of National Academy of Engineering, USA • Member of National Academy of Sciences, USA • Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials • Harvard University, USA Topic: Adhesion between Soft Materials and Tissues Abstract: Many living tissues are soft materials; so are synthetic hydrogels and elastomers. Adhering dissimilar soft materials creates functions. For example, soft devices can mimic neuromuscular and neurosensory systems—actuating, sensing, signaling—by integrating hydrogels and hydrophobic elastomers. Other examples include wound dressing, drug delivery, and surgery. This talk describes approaches to achieve strong adhesion between soft materials through mechanics, chemistry, and topology. Biography: Zhigang Suo is Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard University. He earned a bachelor degree from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1985, and a Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1989. Suo joined the faculty of the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1989, Princeton University in 1997, and Harvard University in 2003. His research centres on mechanics and materials. Suo co-founded iMechanica.org, and is a founding co-editor-in-chief of Extreme Mechanics Letters. He was a member of the Executive Committee (2005-2010, Chair 2010) of the Applied Mechanics Division, of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Suo received the Humboldt Research Award, the Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal, the Special Achievement Award for Young Investigators in Applied Mechanics, the Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award, and the Prager Medal. He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. Upcoming PAIR Events: https://www.polyu.edu.hk/pair/news-an...
