Drum Teacher Reacts: VOLA – “Owls” | Felix Ewert Drum Playthrough (FIRST TIME)

This reaction was requested by long-time supporter Jim, and I’m very glad he did — because this was my first real deep listen to VOLA. Band: VOLA Song: “Owls” Drummer: Felix Ewert This isn’t just chops or speed — this is control, sound choice, and composition. Felix plays with incredible restraint, precision, and awareness of the song’s architecture. Every note feels intentional. Nothing wasted. Nothing accidental. As a drum teacher, what stood out immediately was the balance between mechanical tightness and musical feel. The groove lives in that modern prog space where timing, subdivision, and tone are doing just as much work as the hands and feet. Jim also mentioned this is a band worth exploring deeply — albums, not just singles — and based on this performance, I completely get why. There’s a lot going on here beneath the surface.
