Its history is linked to the process of exploring the far west of Brazil, as well as the exploitation of rubber and minerals in the Amazon Rainforest. Currently, the state is a major producer of soybeans and beef. In addition, it has an infrastructure comprised of equipment that contributes to the region's economy, such as the Madeira waterway and the Santo Antônio and Jirau hydroelectric power plants. The state is predominantly made up of plains areas, with rainforest vegetation and an equatorial climate. Rondônia is the third most populous state in Northern Brazil. It has many indigenous reserves, and the native population has directly influenced the habits and customs of the people of Rondônia. Geography of Rondônia The state of Rondônia is located in the North region of Brazil. It borders Bolivia and shares borders with the states of Acre, Amazonas, and Mato Grosso. Rondônia's territory has a predominantly flat relief, typical of plains areas. The higher areas are concentrated in the southeastern portion of the state, in the Parecis plateau region, as well as in the northwestern portion, due to the Serra dos Pacáas Novos mountain range. Rondônia's hydrography is composed of large rivers, notably the Madeira, Ji-Paraná, Guaporé, and Mamoré rivers. The state's climate is equatorial, characterized by high temperatures and high rainfall. The vegetation is entirely composed of the Amazon Rainforest. History of Rondônia The current territory of Rondônia was one of the last areas colonized in Brazil. Concern about the far western border of the country increased due to frequent invasions by foreign forces, as well as the uncertainty surrounding the territorial domains of Spain and Portugal in South America. Thus, through the signing of the Treaty of Madrid (1750), Portugal secured the territory of Rondônia, comprising the lands located on the right bank of the Guaporé River. The mapping of the state territory was carried out through the exploration of the rivers, important transportation routes in the state, and in 1781, the land borders were officially marked. Since then, the settlement of the state has effectively begun. The exploitation of rubber, with the consequent construction of the Madeira-Mamoré railway, as well as the exploitation of minerals, such as gold, in the rivers of Rondônia, were the two driving forces behind the territorial occupation of the state. The territory of Rondônia belonged to the states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso, becoming a national territory in 1943, under the name Territory of Guaporé. In 1956, the territory's name was changed to Rondônia, in homage to one of the region's pioneers, Marshal Cândido Rondon. In 1981, the territory was elevated to a state of Brazil. Demographics of Rondônia The population of Rondônia is composed of 1,796,460 people, with the majority of the state's inhabitants being descendants of immigrants from various regions of Brazil who emigrated to the region throughout the 20th century. In addition, the indigenous population is very significant in the state. The largest city in Rondônia is the capital, Porto Velho, with 539,354 inhabitants. Besides the capital, other cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants are Ji-Paraná, Ariquemes, and Vilhena. Economy of Rondônia The economic landscape of Rondônia is characterized by agricultural activities. The primary sector is responsible for the state's main commercial exchanges, with emphasis on beef and soybean production. The number of grain plantations in the state has been increasing significantly in recent years, as has cattle ranching. In addition to agriculture, the state's primary sector includes extractive activities, such as logging and tin production. Culture of Rondônia The culture of Rondônia was formed by the different peoples who emigrated to the state throughout the 20th century, especially those from the South and Northeast of Brazil. Furthermore, the state has a strong indigenous presence, and the local society has incorporated the customs and traditions of these peoples into its daily life. In addition to Carnival, the state has large June Festivals, due to the influence of immigrants from the Northeast, and also many agricultural fairs, an influence of the population from the central-southern region of Brazil that emigrated to the state. The most practiced sport locally is football, and the diet is based on the consumption of beef, as well as fish and cassava flour.
