Learning English Podcast Sturdy Roman buildings, malaria vaccine, Black ballet
Why have those old Roman buildings lasted so long? Can we use their techniques in modern buildings? Listen to learn this and more! On Today's podcast, Dan Novak and Ashley Thompson host the show. Dan tells listeners what they will hear on the program. 1:03 First, Dan has a report on scientists who are trying to make construction materials that last longer than existing ones hoping to improve on centuries of development. They are trying to learn how, for example, the ancient Romans made such long-lasting concrete. 7:23 Then, Jill Robbins tells the story of Ruth Essel who founded Pointe Black Ballet School in London for Black dancers. She sees it a safe space for Black dancers to get guidance, and a way to create a community-based network of schools, dancers, and teachers. Her effort is something she says her younger self would have liked. 11:44 Then, on the Health & Lifestyle Report: Caty Weaver report that the World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a second malaria vaccine. The decision could offer a less costly and readily available shot to help fight the disease. Existing vaccines have limited effectiveness. 19:00 After that comes Lesson of the Day with Jill and Andrew Smith. They talk about shortened forms of common words and the use of everyone and similar words. Then, Dan and Ashley sign off.
